(2017) ED 402/502: Secondary Students as Learners

A traditionally-scheduled course that utilizes innovative pedagogical strategies including Team-Based Learning, Hands-on Instruction, and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). One of the things the students seem to love is the array of guest speakers with specialized educational experience that come to talk with them. This course services students getting an initial certification in Secondary or P-12 teaching fields. Although this is could be your typical lecture-hall type class, I prefer varied instructional approaches that are more constructivist and student-centerd in nature. Students participate in several exciting course activities to help them learn the course content. These include:

  • Educational Theorist Tea Party--students attempt to bring learning theories to life while making connections between theory and practice. As a part of this assignment, students contribute to a wiki to compile the information on all of the assigned theorists.

  • Team-Based Learning --students participate in permanent learning teams while helping each other to learn the course material. These teams allow students to have individual accountability while also learning how to work collaboratively and peer review.

  • BYOD--The Bring Your Own Device teaching strategy is modeled for students. They engage in course content while also discussing how to manage classrooms with electronic devices. View the BYOD Orientation used in this class.
